4 cups sugar
2 cups cold water
1/2 cup Karo syrup
Place sugar and water in a heavy saucepan. Heat to boiling, stirring slowly until sugar is all melted; add Karo.

Boil rapidly until thermometer registers 238° (soft ball stage). Remove from heat, place saucepan in large bowl of cold water.

Do not move until fondant is almost cold, then beat until substance becomes white and thickens.

Place in a tightly-covered jar until ready to use.
